Tidelands
Curiouser and curiouser. Feels like it has been
days since I went for my first reef walk, when it was only but yesterday morning. That power nap I took might have something to do with it, of course... Hrm. For the uninitiated,
my power naps aren't like your conventional power naps. 'nuff said.
So I hopped out of bed at 0415 hrs on Saturday, 15 minutes before my alarm clock was due to scream. First reef walk, and I was expected to be at Sentosa at 0530 hrs to catch the 6 am ferry to Kusu island. Thank goodness D was going too - that meant I could get a lift at an hour when the buses were not yet running. Phew.
Ok, so what's all this about waking up and running off to
ulu islands in the wee hours of the morning eh. Heard of
Blue Water Volunteers? No? Well, what about intertidal zones? Okaaay, how about that stretch of sand that's covered up by the sea during high tide, and exposed during low tide?
Welcome to a whole new world, all ye land lubbers. Arrrrrr. Frankly, I couldn't spot anything of the remotest interest when I attempted to help Z with some pre-walk scouting. The whole area looked grey and dismal, almost boggish. But boy (as most of you can probably guess by now), were there some pretty sights to take in once the walk actually started with the facilities of the guides. Highlights included an aggressive flower crab, a peacock sole, and NUDIBRANCHS, otherwise known as your flamboyant
sea slugs. To think I saw none during my dive trip. I like them sea slugs, the often colourful creatures they are. Hehe.
Really nice experience on the whole, and it'll certainly be rewarding to volunteer as a reef walk guide with BWV. Part educator, part advocate for marine conservation. It'll be some time before I actually start guiding though, considering that there's training to undergo!
